Dauner News Update, April 2010
CHURCH NEWS BITES
• CEM foreign mission trip to Ukraine, March 15-23. One of our CEM students, Constantine Tertov (our foster son) is of Ukrainian origin, which motivated us to organize the week-long mission. Brady Smith, missionary in Switzerland who regularly visits Ukrainian churches, led and guided the group, along with Greg Young.
• Church-sponsored showing of the film Fireproof on March 27. Even though it was presented in the original English version with French subtitles, it had a strong impact on the sixty or so people—mostly teens and young adults—who attended.
• The annual spring concert tour of Chorale Harmonie, April 12-17, will take us to Italy, Croatia and Switzerland. The Croatians went all out, organizing concerts in three different towns. (See the poster above).
• A biblical play recounting the story of Esther is scheduled to be presented at our chapel on May 29. Over forty children from our different youth groups will be in the cast. Katie Young directs the play; Prisca again wrote the lyrics of the songs. (She is rapidly closing in on her 100th hymn, not counting the dozens of songs written as the lyricist of our biblical plays).
• No answer yet from the owner of our rented church property about selling it to us. Whatever the answer, the roofs of two of the buildings will definitely have to be replaced if we are to continue occupying them. In theory, the cost of those repairs falls to the owner.
• Surprise! A delegation of twelve local elected and appointed officials, including a député (member of congress), visited our chapel and spent an hour or two, around coffee and cake, discussing our church and its place in the neighborhood. This is the first truly positive interest in the church that I have personally experienced in forty years on the part of the government.
FURLOUGH ITINERARY
Here, finally, is the definitive version of our summer itinerary:
July 23-August 5
Topeka, Kansas
August 5-12
Beamsville, Ontario
August 12-19
Littleton, Colorado
August 19-26
Mountain View, California
This schedule requires that we limit our participation in the 2010 Harmony Bible Camp to the first week of the two-week event. It looks like both of us will see duty in the kitchen and perhaps also as Bible class teachers.
